Great place to eat! Went for lunch and will return for dinner before we leave the area. Ate lobster bisque and lobster salad instead of shrimp on the shrimp salad plate. Others had clams and coconut shrimp which were also good. The coconut shrimp came with mango tarter sauces that was great!! PJ was our waitress and she was fantastic! Great fresh seafood alive. off their own boats never frozen. Great service and good

This is our 3rd time here. We enjoy this place being on the water and the manatees wading out on the back! That was neat! The waitress we had sucked today. She never came to ask us how we were doing? Other than that it is always a great experience! The Escargot is to dieeeee for! Love it! I had the salmon, baked potato and applesauce. Even the applesauce is chunking and memorable. Love coming here.

My husband and I were in Crystal River this past weekend for Valentines and decided to check out Charlies. Since it was cold and dark, we opted to sit inside, although I'm sure it would be wonderful to sit outside overlooking the bay on a nice day or early evening. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, but were totally fine with that, as it was a Saturday night and also Valentines day. The crowd was much older and the restaurant itself is very dated...although again, we are fine with that as long as they have good food and good service. We had the stone crab claws for an appetizer, which were OK, but nothing to brag about for the price. I had the fried shrimp, which were decent size and really good. I had a side salad and cheese grits for my sides. I will have to say that they have some of the best ranch dressing I've ever had. My husband had the grouper with a salad and baked potato. It was good, but nothing you have to come back for. We would've had dessert, but they were out of the selections we wanted. Food was average, but service was their weakness. From the moment we sat down, we felt rushed to get through our meal. Our waitress brought out our salads at the same time she brought our drinks and before our appetizer. Our entrees were not too far behind that. When the options we selected for our desserts were not available, she said "do you guys just want your check, or do you want something else?" This isn't a five star restaurant, so I don't expect 5 star service, however I do expect a little more professionalism and pace of service that is reasonable. Charlie's is casual dining, but I live in Destin, FL where we have many casual dining establishments, and I've never felt as rushed to get through a meal.

We ordered like we had never seen seafood before. A bowl of the lobster bisque and a bowl of the clam chowder. I wasn't a fan of the bisque its bery rich. The wife said it was good but too rich as well. The clam chowder was good, ordered the grouper as did the wife mine was blackened hers was fried neither were worth writing about...

The lobster bisque is absolutely amazing. Best I have ever had. If you go, you must order this dish. Reasonably priced and a delight. For appetizers we got fried calamari and conch fritters. They were great. My husband and I ordered a seafood combination dinner and it was awesome. We chose to get the fish fried and the scallops were my favorite. The staff was friendly and the environment was clean and inviting.

Charlie's seafood restaurant in Crystal River. My wife and I went there for the first time July 5. The restaurant is on the water with inlet views. We were seated right after we arrived. First of all the staff they were friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. Now about the meals my wife and I both had salads mine was custom made the staff was very accommodating. We also shared a lobster bisque it was delicious my wife also found the bisque very delightful. As for our main course I had the cod deep-fried with vegetables. It was also very good. My wife ordered scallops but she found them to be very bland no taste. Well the waitress would come by every so often and ask how we were doing. At the end of the meal she asked if everything was all right wife mentioned that the scallops were very bland and the management apologized and said they would take some money off the bill. We felt that was very nice of the management. So we would go back there again and give them another try. So as far as we're concerned I'm going to give them two thumbs up I would've liked to have given them five stars but the scallops changed our mind. I would recommend the restaurant of my friends.

It's like a wannabe seafood restaurant but every single dish is fried. No raw fish, for someone who likes oysters, the real ones, it's a bit sickening to eat them fried. Except the view and the waitress who speaked to us in french :), this resto is average.

Lots of older folks. Really good service, no oysters on the half shell. Great value, decent food. The coconut shrimp were tasty. I wouldn't come back, but not horrible.

VERY fresh fish, tasty sides, great service (Debra was outstanding) and lovely scenery. What more could you ask? How about getting a slightly reduced dinner portion for lunch at a greatly reduced price!? Yeah - you get that, too. We had turbot, shrimp, grouper and mullet in our two meals here, and it was all terrific. I don't know how you could go wrong with anything on the menu. Add the terrific service and the lovely ambiance and you've got a real winner. I only wish their desserts were homemade instead of brought in, but I was so full from my meals that I probably could not fit it in anyway. We look forward to dining here next year when we return for another terrific vacation in this recently-discovered (by us, anyway) part of Florida. Who needs theme parks when you have such wonderful state parks??

Found this by accident on the way back from Tallahassee to Pinellas county. Excellent food, service & value.

Always stop here when in the area. Food was very good. Service was excellent. Server was attentive. Right there to get our drinks and take our order. Our drink glasses were never empty the entire time we were here. Food came out fast and was hot. Really good quality. Very tasty. Don't understand any of the negative reviews here. Guess any server can have a bad day or the chef can put out a bad meal now and then. Charlie's is always packed. All types of folks in here right now. Young and old. Check out my other reviews. If someplace serves bad food or bad service that's what I report. I've been here a couple dozen times. Never had a bad meal or bad service. That has been my experience at Charlie's .

Based on Yelp reviews I ordered the bisque and blackened grouper. The bisque was good and the fish a little underdone. I was told there was a 15 minute wait and 30 minutes later got a table. From then on the waitress worked at lightening speed to get me fed and out quickly. She brought the bill before I asked for it and told me to pay up front to get her table back. Not a relaxing dining experience for a $38 meal that was only adequate.

Not very good. They state on the menu that they only season their fish on request. What kind of restaurant does that? And their "homemade" blue cheese was a watery mess. I ordered a sea breeze off their special 2 for 1 cocktail menu. The only thing special was the complete lack of flavor and alcohol.

Amazing, great lunch specials. Good view. Nice staff!

As far as good restaurants in the area go, this one is pretty good. I would go again. I got the lobster bisque and it was very good! The crab legs and crab cakes were good as well. I tried the Turbot blackened and it was delicious! Overall the food is better than average. The Ahi Tuna was not very good; it had little flavor, wasn't presented well, and was more chunky than anything. The service was disappointing as well. The waitress asked me to handle plates more than a few times, which wasn't a big inconvenience, but isn't expected at any restaurant. Compared to the food options available in and around Crystal River, which isn't too much, this place is good. Not mind blowing, but more than decent.

The view was amazing we got a table overlooking the water at sunset. Other tan that everything else was horrible! My boyfriend got the peel and eat shrimp first regret is ordering them. Second is that I didn't take a picture of these sad pathetic little things. They looked so awful I didn't even want to try one and the last one he put in his mouth he spit it out. I order fried fish. It was ok. He also got a mashed potato for a side and it was soooo over cooked I could tell just by looking at it. He told me that it was mushy. At the end of our meal the waitress asked how it was. I told her the shrimp was awful and tasted like it was frozen (he had more than half of his meal left). She responded by saying the shrimp is fresh. If that's the case then they cooked it about 12 hours earlier. She asked if we wanted a replacement. We were already done! We said no so she brought us the check. She didn't even take half of the shrimp meal off the check!! When we got up to the counter to pay the cashier asked us if we wanted to add a tip. When he said no. She immediately got an attitude with us. All in all worse than cafeteria food and other than the great view so not worth it. They had plastic table cloths and bug zappers...INSIDE!!!

The lobster bisque is a game changer friends. I highly recommend you try it. Bowl is big enough for two as appetizer. Server Andrea was great. The coconut shrimp are very good but super sweet with the house piña coloda sauce. Two for one draft drinks all day everyday is worth coming for.
(5)Giacomo C.
Nice seafood place. Right on the bay. I got the fried Mullet lunch special and it was excellent. The key lime pie was very tasty.
(4)Scott T.
We ate here on May22, 2015. Food was OK. Average would be my rating. The four of us had a variety of seafood and steak. I would go back but I've eaten better seafood in the area.
(3)Rita H.
Everything we ordered tasted great...and came in huge portions! Excellent oyster stew...fried scallops were amazing! Service was good....highly recommend for the seafood!
(5)Katie W.
Yummy food, reasonable priced. Mango tilapia tacos were delicious as well as the lobster bisque.
(4)Kurt B.
Buffet grade food. I ordered the peel shrimp, baked potato, salad with blue cheese dressing. The salad had bits of old lettuce; the blue cheese dressing though... now that was real good. The potato was way old... over cooked. The shrimp... old, old, old... the type you can get at a buffet that's been under the lamps too long. Just bad all around. It also came with hush puppies; these tasted good but were chewy... an is old. Not a place to go to if your looking for fresh food. Just don't do it.

Visiting from out of town and was expecting a little better ambiance based on previous reviews. There was no music at all, full of old folks, so all I could hear were forks and knives clinking on some of the many platters they serve one entree on. I had the mahi dinner special (off a printed 'specials' menu that had been laminated and featured more items than the actual menu) and it was pretty dry and over seasoned. The food is pretty Southern and bland, I attributed that to all the old people I saw around and that they over seasoned my mahi. I don't they they blacken fish often with that crowd. The shrimp jalapeno poppers and stone crab were pretty tasty though. Wish we would have eaten next door! Also, they serve Turbot. They describe it as "What most restaurants sell as grouper, it is processed and packed right on the boat". A guest with us asked the waitress if it was reconstituted and I don't think she knew what that word meant. She said "It's a ten ounce fish-of-filet." Haven't heard fish-of-filet since I was at the McDonald's drive through.

Don't understand why my review was not recommended for posting. Please be sure to read it though. Meal and service was excellent. My husband had the grouper sandwich blackened and I had the seafood platter. He had to help me finish it, there was so much food! Good food and good service... Couldn't ask for more!

I don't understand the negative reviews: I've never had a problem. Food is good, service is good. Fish store attached is excellent. It is what it is, of course--Old Florida. Don't expect haute cuisine, bouillabaisse, and clams casino. It's fried, broiled fish. The grouper season is short, so don't be surprised if it is frozen. Most "fresh" seafood has been packed in ice anyway. Just know what fish is in season and local. I am picky, but it pays to have perspective.

We had dinner at Charlie's 2/18/14 and that will be our last time there. I had pasta with Alfredo Sauce and grilled chicken. Chicken was like rubber, pasta tasted like it was quite old and reheated, very starchy taste. Did not eat much of this. Husband ordered grouper - not sure that is what he got. No flavor it was cooked WITHOUT any seasoning. Waitress was supposed to ask if he wanted seasoning.

First and foremost, realize you are in a restaurant in Citrus County, in the City of Crystal River. Crystal River has a great tourist appeal, but when the tourist season is low, then the local demographic reigns ... retired and elderly people. So the ambiance is not what is expected of a "higher class" seafood restaurant. Anyway, the food is good. I have gone for lunch and dinner and other occasions when I am in the area for work and it has never disappointed. After all the restaurant has its own fishing boats and seafood store, so the seafood is good quality. It is nothing fancy but good. As for the wait staff, always friendly and efficient. I don't think I have ever had any issues. And the atmosphere, it is what it is. Remember, elderly community, so you won't find a local "young" crowd, but it is a nice clean restaurant and even with the option to sit on their patio overlooking the river.

Just wasted $175 at this terrible restaurant. Soggy fried tasteless seafood. Yuck!! We had a table of 5 and none of the food was good. Don't go
(1)Jane P.
I was served old, improperly cooked stone crab claws. The explaination..."the water temperature has been high" Do they think that I am stupid? Stay away!!!
(1)Rich S.
Went in for dinner, and was pleased enough to return the next night. Seafood is really well prepared. Gumbo, crab cakes, stuffed salmon, grouper on Caesar salad- all top notch. Family restaurant rather than "fine dining" but exceeds expectations. Service was friendly and attentive. Building is nice and pleasantly well lit, with multiple sports screens but all without sound.
(4)Steve S.
The food is good and so is the service. Don't be fooled by the 2 for 1 happy hour on mixed drinks though - they put in 1/2 the alcohol! If it really was a 2 for 1, I'd rate the place 4 stars. The deck is a really nice place to sit and enjoy a meal. We have only eaten on the deck because the dining room is too cold. We won't go unless it is nice outside because of that.
(3)Huck K.
Good food and we always have good service. I like to sit outside and look over the water. It is fun to watch the manatees and tarpon that hang around. Always an enjoyable experience.
